The Importance of Mastering Classic Lashes!
It’s a little controversial, but I’m a firm believer in mastering Classic Lashes before you advance or move on with learning new techniques.
A lot of beginner artists want so badly to dive into volume lashes as quickly as they can because typically, you can make more money. But hear me out, I charge $175 for a Full Set of Classic Lashes and you can too. Depending on the area you’re in, you could even charge more.
Classic Lashes allow you to focus on getting your technique perfect. Think about a Hairdressing Apprenticeship, you have to master cutting hair before you advance to colouring & performing balayage. Classic lashing is just the same.
Start with the basics, the most important part of lashing is Isolation, every Lash Educator you meet will tell you that isolation is key. Making sure that you’ve only ever applied an extension to one natural lash is the biggest focus as a beginner. If you stick multiple lashes together, you can cause damage and that’s a path you don’t want to go down.
Rather than having split focus on trying to create a really thick & dramatic set, you can take your time on getting all of the techniques, like isolation, perfect before moving on.
In my personal experience, post training, students who focus solely on Classic lashes for 3-6 months (as many hours as possible) develop the skill set quickly and are able to master the basic techniques of lashing such as:
• Isolation
• Positioning your hands
• Pressure applied
• Applying eye gel pads correctly
• Changing sizing seamlessly
• Correct glue usage
• Lash Retention
• Understanding environment and humidity
• Safe weights on the natural lashes
• Identifying different natural lashes
• Learning different lash maps suitable for clients
• How to sit comfortably & protect your back
How will beginning with Classic Lashes benefit your business?
- Classic Lashes are a faster service to complete. Most clients know that Classic Lashes are a more subtle look, due to this you don’t have the pressure from your clients to try & create a thick or intense volume set.
- Easier to find suitable clients, when your first starting out you want clients that are going to be understanding and reasonable with expectations that you can achieve. Advertising Classic Beginner Lashes, you can advertise at an affordable rate, with a more reasonable time frame and the clients won’t be expecting big fluffy volume lashes. It makes it easier to break into the industry and less stress / pressure for a Beginner.
- If you have Mastered Classic Lashes, you’ll find it much easier to move into Volume Lashes and then you can focus on creating a full, fluffy set rather than just trying to figure out how to isolate lashes and hold your hands steady. If you’ve got the basics down pat, everything else will be easier to master.
- Long term, there are monetary benefits! By creating value in your Classic Full Set, you can increase the value of the services you add next rather than heavily discounting them as well. Eg) Hybrid or Volume Lashes. If you’ve got your Classic Lash skills down pat and you’re charging $120 for a Classic Full Set, introducing a $150 Volume Set doesn’t seem as big of a jump for your clients.
So as a Beginner Volume Artist, you’ll be charging $150 for a Full Set (because you’re already trained, qualified & confident in 90% of the treatment you’re providing). Rather than if you were to try and introduce Classic, Hybrid & Volume lashes all at the beginning and you’d only be able to charge Beginners prices for your sets.
Less Expenditure at the beginning: it’s much more affordable to begin with Classic Lashes.
- You can start lashing with a minimum of around 6-8 trays of lashes – you can get mixed length trays, 0.12 & 0.15 thickness, C, CC & D Curl: and you can start lashing and creating Full Sets. Whereas if you’re looking at introducing Volume Lashes – particularly Premade / Promade Fans you’ll need to invest in a wider range to cater for your clients. Eg) 3D, 5D & 8D Fans in all curls and lengths. Which is typically a much larger cost than for Classic Lashes. Alongside this, you’ll also be charging Beginners prices – meaning that your return on investment is significantly less than it would be if you were to introduce Volume Lashes once your Classic Lash Skills are more established.
There are so many reasons why it’s incredibly beneficial for your skill development & your business to focus on getting Classic Lashes absolutely mastered before you move on to Volume or Hybrid Lashes. I hope this blog helps if you were toying on a decision of how to break into the Lash Industry and provides a little bit of insight from my own personal experiences over the last 8 Years in the Lash Industry!
